Web Browsing
From PSPWiki
There is now a fully functional official browser for the PSP which comes with a host of other new features with the v2.0 firmware update. Update by going to the Network Update icon on your PSP. You need to have a fully functional network connection to use the Network Update feature, alternatively it can be downloaded manually from this translated page here (http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=ja&u=http://www.playstation.jp/psp/update/ud_03.html&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dhttp://www.playstation.jp/psp/update/ud_03.html%26hl%3Den%26hs%3D3zE%26lr%3D%26client%3Dfirefox-a%26rls%3Dorg.mozilla:en-GB:official). At the time of writing the North American update is not out yet but will be shortly. Sony for unknown reasons do not recommend that you use the Japanese v2.00 update with any other region unit. There have been no reports of problems however from American PSP owners applying the Japanese v2.00 firmware. The most likely reason for Sony recommending not to install the update is the lack of technical support for v2.00 in the US and that the web portal hardcoded into the firmware doesn't have English support yet. NOTE: The v2.00 firmware is available in the US, but the newest is v2.60.
If you do not wish to update to v2.00, WipEout Pure has a very limited browser built into it. It has a feature to download new content, which simply goes to a specific web address [1] (http://ingame.scea.com/wipeout/index.html) when you connect. By setting your PSP to use a DNS (Domain Name Server) that points this address to a different machine, you can then browse the internet. The browser does not support Java, frames, Flash, or other 3rd party plugins. It does have some Javascript support however. CSS support is also limited.
Advanced users may want to do this on their own computers, but there are dozens of people who have already done this for you, and some have even made dramatic efforts to make the browsing experience better.

RidingTheClutch.com's PSP Portal
Perhaps the most robust of all solutions, Rob Cameron of RidingTheClutch.com (http://www.ridingtheclutch.com) has created a full featured portal, that includes the ability to setup your own personal links ahead of time on your computer, to make accessing content on your PSP much easier.
Changing the DNS
By changing the Primary DNS entry on the PSP to 64.5.48.92 we will be pointing Wipeout to our portal page instead of the intended Sony site.
- On your PSP, open Network Settings, Infrastructure mode, and create a New Connection, naming it something that will remind you that it is for web browsing through WipEout.
- Scan for and choose your wireless network, selecting Custom for the Address Settings
- Choose Automatic for the IP Address settings unless your wireless router doesn't use DHCP, in which case, use Manual, and key in the appropriate local IP address.
- Choose Manual for DNS Settings, and in Primary DNS, use 64.5.48.92
- Complete the rest of the settings (Proxy Server is normally not used), and save the settings. Allow the PSP to test if the connection works. If it does not, make sure your PSP can connect using normal network settings, and if so, go back to step one and verify your new portal connection settings.
Setup your personal portal
On your computer, browse to the portal (http://www.ridingtheclutch.com/wipeout/) page. Create an account, and add links for pages you wish to have quick access to on your PSP. Typing on the PSP is a pain, so the more links you put here, the more pleasant and quick your browsing experience will be.
Browse the web with your PSP
- Start WipEout Pure
- In the main menu, go to the Downloads section
- Select your new portal connection, and you should see the portal page load after it connects.
- Log in to the account you created on your computer, and your personal page and links will load
Browsing using MooPS Mini-DNS
If you don't trust a DNS redirection and portal done by other people on the internet you can easily setup a portal on your own webserver and redirect the nameresolution using the MooPS mini-DNS server. All you need to do is to enter the redirection webserver address and URL in MooPS, and use the ip-adress of your MooPS's server as the primary nameserver in your PSP network configuration.
Browsing using a proxy server
There is a proxy server httPSP (http://mz.skr.jp/httPSP) available, which can be setup on a local windows PC. When the proxy is used in the PSP's network configuration, all requests will be sent through the proxy and pages are enhanced with a PSP-friendly navigation header. Using the DNS workaround is not really necessary, as you can modify your C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts file on your PC to redirect the original Wipeout Pure or Derby Time websites.
Available Browsers for PSP
Meanwhile there seem to be multiple PSP browsers available.
- The browser implemented in the future racing game Wipeout Pure uses the user-agent-string: SCEJ PSP BROWSER 0102pspNavigator
- Another user-agent-string: SCEJ PSP BROWSER 0105 UCJS-10007 was found when using the Japanese version of Wipeout Pure.
- The Korean PSP value pack contains a network access UMD including a browser to access Korean video-on-demand (VOD) and music-on-demand (MOD) content. Both services require a subscription.
- The Japanese game Derby Time can also be used to browse the web in the same way as used in Wipeout Pure. Derby Time uses the user-agent-string: SCEJ PSP BROWSER 0105 UCJS10006 and tries to access the site derby.scej-online.jp on connect.
- Firmware 2.0 adds a PSP web browser function. Allowing the use of URLs, bookmarks, multible browser windows, saving images, and a history. You are also given control of cookies, Proxy server settings, Cache settings, and view settings.
